Rare “One”

Our language is lacking—
Too seldom heard,
The expressive, profound
One syllable word.

Though dictionary scoured,
Thesaurus is too,
I find four syllables,
Three, maybe two.

They are adding the tions,
Ous’s and ness’s
To get case and tense
The idea expresses.

The much-needed expression,
Too seldom heard,
Still eludes me:
Profound, one-syllable word.
